As we begin 2025 and having only just gotten through our first week back, already there is so much to discuss and process, especially stemming from the United States.
And to be honest there is no sugar coating it, as much of it is devastating. It seems that community response and support, at the end of the day, is the only saving grace.
We wanted to touch on the fires in Los Angeles because they bring to reality a topic we at Tricia Love Consultants Ltd often discuss in our advocacy and education work, following the International Living Future Institute's Living Building Challenge philosophy of building without the use of red list chemicals.
These chemicals, which are far too common in our building materials, are disastrous for both human and environmental health. And when these chemicals burn, they are released into our air, absorbed by our lungs and skin, and leach into our soil, groundwater and oceans.
Without getting into details of the gruesome effects these chemicals have on firefighters, families, animals, earth and waterlife, we want to highlight the poignant reasoning behind elimination of red list chemicals in our buildings.
If you are interested in targeting the elimination of red list in your building projects, we hold databases of red list free products and are skilled in material research and vetting. As LBC consultant for every certified Living Building in New Zealand (apart from residential), we can work with you to create healthy buildings as beacons of hope and change, buildings we can be proud of.
It's time to build not to avoid climate change, but to create resilience to climate change. Because it is here, and the time is now.
