The Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) has developed international standards for the practice of ecological restoration. In short, these are standards and guidance for implementing restoration, and lead to what we consider to be best practice ecological recovery.
The system uses a 5-star scale to represent a gradient from very low to very high functionality when compared to a reference ecosystem. This method allows for the classification of a restoration site into one of five recovery levels (1 to 5 stars) based on overall assessment or specific ecosystem attributes.
The Recovery Wheel provides a visual representation of ecological recovery progress using this 5-star system. A fully recovered ecosystem, rated at five stars, is considered self-organising and is the target for all ecological restoration projects. You can see the comparison between pre-restoration and 10-year post-treatment in the image above.
